Biomedical Library Photo Contest
Ask A Librarian

Attention all photographers!
The newly renovated UCSD Biomedical Library is sponsoring a photo contest during April 2007. The library is the subject this time. Come take your best shot of the library’s many photogenic aspects, inside or out, from a distance or up close. The photographers of the top three photos will be awarded gift certificates from Nelson Photo. Winning photos will be displayed throughout the library. Please read the directions carefully, and contact Nancy Stimson at or (858) 534-6321 if you have any questions.

WHAT TO ENTER: There are three categories:
Building - Shots of the UCSD Biomedical Library building, inside and out, architectural details, etc.
People - Individuals or groups of people in or next to the UCSD Biomedical Library.
Altered Images - Photographs from the above two categories manipulated for artistic purposes by applying digital and/or traditional special effects (i.e., hand coloring, toning, bleaching, collage and photo composites, etc.).
Photographs must be shot by the entrant sometime between August 1, 2006-April 30, 2007.
Cropped photos are eligible. Digitally or otherwise enhanced photos are not accepted, except for those entered in the "Altered Images" category. Minor adjustments, including spotting, dodging and burning, contrast and slight color adjustment are acceptable for all categories. If the judges see that a photographer has obviously altered his or her photo, they reserve the right to move the photo to the “Altered Images” category or to disqualify it.
An entrant must hold all rights to a photograph. For a photo in which a person is recognizable, you must secure a model release from the subject or, in the case of a minor, the subject’s parent or guardian. We have a printable PDF model release form.
Do not take photos in non-public areas of the library, and do not disturb people using the library.
Photographs previously published or pending publication, or photos that violate or infringe upon another person’s copyright, are not eligible.
Please submit photographs by e-mail attachment to Send a separate e-mail for each entry. Each entrant may submit a maximum of three photographs per category.
Only digital photographs will be accepted - scanned copies of prints are OK. Photographs must be in JPEG format only and should be between 500k-1Mb in size.

By entering the contest, entrants grant the UCSD Biomedical Library the right to publish and use submitted photographs in print or electronic form for exhibition, publicity and promotional purposes, and for commercial purposes. Any photograph reproduced will include a photographer credit.
All digital entries must be received by midnight on April 30, 2007.
Judging will be conducted by a group of UCSD Biomedical Staff members, medical students, and an undergraduate student. Photos will also be available online after the entry deadline so that the general public can vote for their favorites. The results of this public voting will be one of the considerations that the judges take into account. Decisions made by the judges will be final.
Photos will be judged separately for: amateur photographers, professional photographers, and Biomedical Library staff.
Three winners will be selected and acknowledged for each category (building, people, altered images) but only the top amateur in each category will be awarded a prize.
Winners will be notified about their status by May 31, 2007.
A prize will be given to the first place amateur winner in each category. The prizes will be $100, $50, and $25 gift certificates to Nelson Photo. Note that only three prizes will be awarded.
